The Challenge
Tesla Motors needed a bonding solution to attach multiple layers of Mica in the battery assembly process. 3M determined that even their most advanced adhesive would not work using traditional converting methods because of the brittle and layered nature of the Mica. Each time Tesla tried to apply the adhesive and remove the liner with a traditional lift tab, the adhesive would not transfer onto the mica. This left Tesla wondering if there was a feasible, cost-effective solution.
